Belly Dance Costume Patterns by Dance Genre

Knowledge is Pleasure

First, a worksheet for Troupe Costume Design. There's a lot on there that is common sense, but, speaking for myself, I don't always use common sense when I launch into a new costuming project... and if the costume is for a group I get to see my mistakes on stage in multiple! Very depressing.

The worksheet is designed to remind me to

  1. Think about the context of the dance in detail;
  2. Control that the audience is paying attention to;
  3. Enhance the appearance of the troupe on stage to the maximum.

Karsilama

A karsilama, the most famous of the 9/8 rhythm dances from Turkey and Greece, is often performed in America by a female dancer in a fluffy skirt, a vest over costume bra or peasant blouse, and with the dancer accompanying herself on zills.

Tribal

  1. A classic American Tribal costume often consists of:
  2. A minimalist outfit might consist of top, pants, and a simple hip scarf made from trapezoid pattern pieces..
  3. Hip Panels of yarn or ribbon are often layered over skirts and pants and under tie belts.
  4. Handkerchief hem skirts are often layered over and under other costume pieces. Tribal dancers rarely use them as a leg-covering skirt; they are usually shorter (knee length) and layered over pants or skirts. Sometimes more than one is used.
